About the museum

The decision to build a fortification near Mutzig was taken by Emperor Wilhelm II in January 1893; construction began in April of the same year. Linked to the Strasbourg fortress belt, the “Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II” was meant to block the Rhine plain and the Bruche valley against a French offensive. It received its name in 1896, the year the Namenstein was inaugurated; at the time it was the only visible part of the works.

The fort was the first German fortification built after the invention of mélinite, a very powerful explosive. It served as a laboratory for many techniques: reinforced concrete, steel armour, turrets with minimal embrasures, electricity, observation posts and so-called “dispersed” fortification, in which works are connected by underground galleries. It was put to the test shortly after the declaration of war in 1914.

Abandoned and looted after both world wars, the site has been restored since 1984 by the Fort de Mutzig association, whose volunteers are French and German. The first open days took place in 1986. Only a small part of the complex, around 10%, is restored and open to visitors. The two-kilometre route, largely underground, retains almost all of its original equipment: kitchens, machine room, bakery, hospital and artillery room.
