About the museum
The “Marbre et Terroir” ecomuseum grew out of the will of the commune of Caunes-Minervois and its residents to offer a different view of their heritage, through two emblematic activities: marble and the vine. It is set up in a former industrial shed at 26 avenue du Stade.
It hosts the exhibition “Marbres de Caunes d'hier et d'aujourd'hui”, designed by the association Les Marbrières de Caunes and open since June 2018. It presents panels on the history of marble quarrying at Caunes, tools, photos and a video on the evolution of extraction techniques. It also covers the origin and formation of marble, its use in domestic and religious furniture and in contemporary sculpture, with many samples of marbles from Occitanie.
The ecomuseum also houses the “Collection Julien”, devoted to old winegrowing tools. The association also offers visits to the historic and working quarries of the Terralbes plateau.
