About the museum
The Musée du Chapitre occupies one of the last surviving towers of the medieval town walls of Épinal, in the Saint-Maurice basilica quarter, at 14 rue du Chapitre. The building is visited over three levels.
The collection brings together archaeological finds from excavations in the town, along with pictorial material that traces the evolution of Épinal over the centuries: cannonballs, architectural fragments and everyday objects from the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
On the first floor, a large model shows the town with its castle and fortifications in 1626; it is based on the famous plan by Nicolas Bellot. The third floor is devoted to the history of the canonesses of Épinal. The museum only opens in summer and during the European Heritage Days.
