About the museum
Mirecourt is known for violin and bow making, but it has also built church organs since the 17th century. At the request of the Lorraine court, its workshops also produced serinettes, used to train birds, and salon organs for entertainment until 1910.
The museum, founded in 1998, presents a collection of mechanical musical instruments in working order. It draws mainly on the history of the Maison Poirot, founded in 1806 and run by four generations of organ builders. The visit, guided only, lasts about an hour: the guide plays the instruments, among them salon organs, military and fairground organs, limonaires, pianos, pneumatic harmoniums, music boxes and the Decap dance organ.
Some instruments required up to a thousand hours of restoration. The museum also includes a display on bobbin lace, a traditional craft of the region. It is run by the Communauté de communes Mirecourt Dompaire.
