About the museum
The Musée de l'Image opened on May 3, 2003, on the Quai de Dogneville in Épinal, opposite the former Pellerin factory, founded in 1796 and now the Imagerie d'Épinal. The two sites complement each other: the Imagerie shows how the images were made, while the museum tells their history and culture and offers keys to reading them.
The contemporary building, which overlooks the Moselle, was designed by the agency Repérages Architecture. Its glass façade bears a large fresco of many small images, evoking a village festival. The museum is run by the City of Épinal.
The collections include more than 110,000 works of French and foreign popular imagery from the 16th century to today. In 2010 the City acquired the Henri George collection, of about 85,000 pieces, almost tripling the holdings; in 2019 it added more than 300 pieces from the Charles Pierre collection. The permanent exhibition tells the story of popular images, their engravers and printing centers, and their uses: to instruct, to entertain, to sell. The works are rotated regularly to protect them from light.
