About the museum
The forge belonged to the Petitjean family, a line of blacksmiths and farriers. In 1843, Nicolas-Eugène Petitjean set up his workshop in the former dye-house of an estate in Étueffont-Haut. The business then passed from father to son, until the mechanisation of agriculture gradually reduced its customers. The forge stopped working in 1977.
In 1980, César Petitjean sold the building and its contents to the commune. Some fifteen volunteers fitted out the premises, and the museum opened its doors on June 13, 1981. The family’s last blacksmith took part in the setup himself and donated the tools of four generations of blacksmiths.
The building has been listed as a historic monument since 1993, and the museum bears the “Musée de France” designation. Today an association runs the site: it offers guided tours, mediation activities for all ages and forge demonstrations for groups.
