Temporarily closed (expected until 2026). The museum is closed to the public during the extension works on Rue de Mulhouse; bastion towers 41 and 46, which housed the fine art collections and temporary exhibitions, are also closed. Reopening under the name Musée d’Art de Belfort – donation Maurice-Jardot had been announced for late 2026 (March 2026 information), without a precise date.

About the museum

The museum of modern art grew out of the donation of Maurice Jardot, a great connoisseur of 20th-century art: around 110 works were given to the City of Belfort in 1997, and some forty more in 2002. It opened in 1999 under the name “Cabinet d’un amateur”, in homage to the art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. It moved to Rue de Mulhouse, into a 19th-century manor house that once belonged to the family of the poet Léon Deubel. The collection includes works by Picasso, Braque, Juan Gris, Henri Laurens, André Masson, Le Corbusier and Fernand Léger.

The city’s fine art collections, around 150 works from the Middle Ages to the present day, were displayed in bastion tower 41. They include paintings by Pieter Pourbus and Gustave Courbet, engravings by Albrecht Dürer, and the bequest of the sculptor and painter Camille Lefèvre. Temporary exhibitions took place in tower 46, which was closed for that purpose in March 2025.

To reduce the scattering of sites, the city is building an extension by Adelfo Scaranello, connected to the villa, covering nearly 1,000 m². It is to house modern art, fine art, a graphic arts cabinet and temporary exhibition spaces under the name Musée d’Art de Belfort – donation Maurice-Jardot. Opening had been announced for late 2026 (according to March 2026 information).
