About the museum

The idea for a museum of crafts and popular traditions arose in 1986, when Michel Vallat, a native of Brebotte, gave a farm building to the local association. The association saw it as an opportunity to make rural traditions better known. The following year, the Charbonnier-Chalmey family from the neighboring village of Boron donated another main building; it was dismantled, moved to Brebotte and reassembled to form a single complex with the first building.

With financial support from the Conseil général and the efforts of many volunteers, the project took shape. This 19th-century farm, typical of rural architecture in the south of the Territoire de Belfort, now houses an extensive collection of objects from the past.

The museum showcases crafts that are disappearing. It presents the daily life of a farming family, rural trades between 1850 and 1950 (weaver, clog maker, cooper, blacksmith, wheelwright, stonemason …) and the evolution of techniques, including the steam engine from the former Suarce sawmill.
