About the museum

The museum occupies a half-timbered house dated 1590, a Renaissance-style patrician residence that faced the square of the Marmoutier abbey. The building has been a listed historic monument since 1932; the protection covers in particular the oriel façades, the roof and the polychrome painted ceilings of the ground floor.

Over three floors, the museum tells of the craftsmen who worked on the abbey church, as well as of rural life and Judaism in Alsace in the 18th and 19th centuries. The route is organised by theme: façade, kitchen, Stube, linen room, Renaissance hall, popular beliefs, Judaism, forge, pottery, trades, and an area devoted to Albert Kahn.

The Judaism room brings together many domestic and ritual objects, displayed in cases dedicated to each Jewish festival (Passover, Sukkot, Purim, Hanukkah). The museum also traces the Jewish presence in Marmoutier, attested from the early 14th century: the community numbered fewer than 30 people in 1650, 299 in 1784 and nearly 500 in the mid-19th century. The museum also has a mikveh.
