About the museum
Haliotika opened in 2000 under the name Cité de la Pêche, on the initiative of the commune of Le Guilvinec. The site is on the panoramic terrace overlooking the harbour. It celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2020.
The venue has been run since 2006 as a mixed-economy company (société d’économie mixte). It presents the profession of fisherman and the fishing industry, with the displays renewed by about half roughly every six years. A new presentation entitled “Tout est bon dans le poisson” was installed in 2026.
The main route takes visitors on board the Bara Breizh, a reconstructed trawler. Crew members are met on board, and the visit ends with a film, “Histoire d’une marée”, which tells the story of a fishing trip at sea. A second guided tour leads into the coastal fish market, where langoustines and freshly landed fish are sold at auction. From the terrace, visitors can also watch the trawlers return at the end of the day on fishing days.
The venue also welcomes school classes and groups, and offers cookery workshops and holiday activities.
