Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-12-19). The château of the Barons of Pont, which houses the museum, is closed for renovation work. The official website announces closure until the end of 2026.

About the museum

The Musée Bigouden was founded in 1955 by a small group of local figures, including the mayor of the time, in the context of the revival of museums of folk arts and traditions. It moved into the keep of the château of the Barons of Pont, a fortress from the 13th and 14th centuries that was burned during the Bonnets rouges (Red Caps) revolt in 1675. It has been under state supervision since 1958 and received the “Musée de France” designation in 2002.

From 2007 a small team revived the museum: inventory and reconciliation (récolement) of the collections, temporary exhibition programs and the annual renewal of the textile displays. The museum presents the traditional society of some twenty communes west of Quimper and Bénodet through objects, furniture, costumes, farm tools and maritime items.

The coiffe and costume of the Bigouden form the heart of the collections. The museum also tells the story of Bigouden embroidery and of the embroidery houses that employed thousands of women. The château is currently closed for major renovation work.
