About the museum

The Loctudy cannery was built in 1901 by potato merchant Jean-Marie Vallière des Filières. Between 1917 and 1919 it was sold to Alexis Le Gall, son of a canner from Douarnenez. It closed in the mid-1950s after a poor sardine season.

Alexis Le Gall passed the site on to his daughter Henriette. The factory and its outbuildings were later bought by Jean-Philippe Chapalain, husband of Alexis Le Gall’s granddaughter, who preserved them from the late 1980s to the early 2010s. The town of Loctudy took over the site in 2016.

The museum comprises two spaces linked by their history: the seaside villa, built in 1885 by Marie Prudence de La Grandière and later the home of the Le Gall family, and the factory near the harbour. The museum is listed as a historic monument. It preserves the memory of fish-canning activities in Brittany in the first half of the 20th century and covers more than 500 m².
