About the museum
Jacques de Thézac (1862–1936) founded the Œuvre des Abris du Marin in 1900 to offer sailors an alternative to cafés and to fight alcoholism. The Sainte-Marine shelter was built in 1910 to plans by the architect René Darde. It served as a refuge and meeting place for sailors passing through.
The building operated until 1985. The commune bought it in 1992, after which it housed a local association’s library and exhibitions. Restored from 2006 with the Fondation du Patrimoine, it has been listed in the Inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques since October 2007.
It opened as a museum in autumn 2008. Located in the heart of the harbour, it tells the story of the Abris du Marin and of life for Breton fishermen at the start of the 20th century, with photographs, objects and films across several rooms. Each year it also presents temporary exhibitions on maritime themes.
