About the museum

Le Magasin is a contemporary art center in Grenoble, set up on the former Bouchayer-Viallet industrial site. Its statutes date from 1982, and it was one of the major cultural projects announced in 1981 by President François Mitterrand. It opened in 1986 under the name Centre national d'art contemporain.

The building is a former metal-industry hall. The City of Grenoble restored the site in 2005, notably its large glass roof. Several directors have succeeded one another, including Yves Aupetitallot from 1995 to 2015 and Béatrice Josse from 2016 to 2021.

In 2016 the venue took the name Magasin des horizons. It closed in 2020, was occupied in 2021 under the name La Supérette, and reopened in 2022 under new management. The Magasin is run by an association under the French 1901 law, supported by the Ministry of Culture, the City of Grenoble, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region and the Isère Département.

The center supports the creation, production and dissemination of contemporary visual art. It presents temporary exhibitions of artists, accompanied by meetings, dialogue tours and workshops, but it has no permanent collection on display.
