About the museum
The Maison des châteaux forts is in the village of Obersteinbach, in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, at the start of many hiking trails to the castle ruins in the area. It is housed in the village's former Catholic presbytery, where the local association Patrimoine d'ici set up the museum in the 1980s.
The exhibition displays photographs explaining the architectural features of the ruins, maps, and a set of remains shown on site: dressed stones, stove tiles and pottery. One area is devoted to the Château du Petit Arnsberg, which overlooks the village, with plans, photographs and objects from excavations. Texts and captions are in French, German and English.
The garden, labyrinth and orchard around the house are open to the public. They are equipped with benches, thematic panels and an interactive tourist information kiosk.
