About the museum
The Maison du Seigle opened in 1989 in Ménessaire (Côte-d'Or). It is the first theme house in the network of the Morvan Ecomuseum, now run by the Morvan Regional Nature Park.
The museum occupies the village’s former classroom. It shows how rye, a hardy cereal suited to poor soils and a cold climate, dominated agriculture in the Morvan until around the middle of the 20th century.
The route explains the ingenuity of the farmers, who used every part of the plant to feed themselves and to make everyday objects, such as beehives, chair seats or thatched roofs. It also presents living conditions in the Morvan since the Ancien Régime.
