About the museum

The Maison des Hommes et des Paysages was created in 2000 as the fifth thematic house in the network of the Morvan Ecomuseum. This network, coordinated by the Morvan Regional Natural Park, now includes nine thematic houses and three associated sites; the Maison des Hommes et des Paysages is the central house and is managed directly by the Park.

It occupies former outbuildings of a château built in the early 19th century, within the Maison du Parc. This 40-hectare estate in Saint-Brisson was acquired in 1975 by the Park’s joint syndicate to set up its headquarters. The buildings now house the Park administration, the tourist office, a bistro, discovery trails and two museums.

The route “Morvan, une histoire d’échanges et de migrations” tells, from prehistory to the present day, the story of the people of the Morvan, who traveled widely, and of those who welcomed them. A giant comic strip and a model of the territory guide the visit. An exhibition also presents local crafts such as the plèchie, dry-stone walling and ancient cereal varieties. In 2026, new themes were added: Morvan housing, the Morvandelles and the changes of the 20th century. The museum received the Qualité Tourisme label in 2024.
