About the museum
The museum occupies the house where the philosopher Pierre Bayle (1647–1706) was born. Restored in the style of the period, it stands in the center of the village, near the temple where his father and brother, both pastors in Carla, preached.
The museum was created on the initiative of Élisabeth Labrousse and fitted out with help from Hans Bots, director of the Institut Pierre Bayle at the University of Nijmegen. It opened in 1989. A documentation center on Bayle's work was also planned.
The route follows Bayle's life and thought, from the Protestant county of Foix to his exile in Rotterdam, passing through Puylaurens, Toulouse, Geneva and Sedan. It features a reconstruction of his study in Rotterdam, documents, books and objects, and a video on his life and work. The museum also evokes his influence in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, notably on the Encyclopedists.
