About the museum
The Bagnols-sur-Cèze museum was founded in 1859 by Léon Alègre. In 1917 the painter Albert André became its curator. He turned this varied collection into one of the first modern art museums in the provinces, which served as a model for other towns such as Grenoble and Saint-Tropez.
The museum is often called the “Musée de l’amitié” (museum of friendship), because the curator’s painter friends made many gifts to it. Renoir and Monet supported it, as did artists of their generation such as Georges d’Espagnat, Louis Valtat and Jean Puy. A fire in 1924 destroyed part of the old art collection, making room for modern art.
Art critic George Besson bequeathed his collection to the State, and part of it is on deposit in Bagnols-sur-Cèze. It includes works by Marquet, Matisse, Bonnard and Van Dongen, as well as painters of the 1950s “Jeune Peinture” movement such as Guy Bardone, René Génis and Paul Guiramand. The museum is on the third floor of the town hall.
