About the museum
Since 1933 the museum has occupied a 17th-century mansion opposite the Roman theatre. The building was erected by Georges Van Cuyl, a Dutchman in charge of the munitions of the castle of the princes of Orange, which stood on top of the Saint-Eutrope hill. The mansion has kept its original staircase, its windows, French-style ceilings and a fireplace with stucco decoration.
The route includes a Gallo-Roman section and a local history section. Visitors can see archaeological finds from the Roman theatre and Roman cadastral plans engraved on marble, exceptional documents showing how the Roman province was organised. It also covers the Middle Ages, with Count Guillaume au Cornet, then five centuries of the principality of Orange, ruled by Protestant princes. 18th-century painted cloths illustrate the printing of indiennes (printed cottons) at the Wetter factory.
In 1940 the town received a collection of works by the painter Albert de Belleroche and the British artist Frank Brangwyn, adding an artistic dimension to the museum. The collections also include a rich ensemble of furniture and decorative objects.
