About the museum
The museum traces its origins to the library-museum founded in 1859 by Léon Alègre (1813–1884), a local scholar, archaeologist, historian and draughtsman. It is housed in a 19th-century building in the Moorish style on Avenue Paul Langevin.
The collections bring together remains found in the region, from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity, as well as old drawings of the region, views of Bagnols-sur-Cèze and drawings of neighbouring villages by Léon Alègre. The museum holds the “Musée de France” designation.
The museum has been closed to the public for several years. According to a press article from November 2022, the mayor of Bagnols-sur-Cèze considered the building unsuitable for receiving the public and felt the site should be rethought, with a new project and significant investment. No reopening date is known. The Musée Albert-André, housed in the town hall, devotes two rooms of its 2026 programme to rare books from the Léon Alègre library-museum.
