About the museum
The idea of a museum dates back to the 1880s, when the construction of the Eauze railway station revealed many remains of the ancient town of Elusa. The most remarkable pieces were, however, gradually entrusted to other museums, such as those in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Toulouse or Auch.
The discovery of the Eauze treasure on October 18, 1985 gave the project new momentum. In 1987 the commune bought two neighboring houses, previously occupied by a bank, to house the museum, which opened on March 1, 1995. The treasure is displayed in the basement, in the former strongroom.
The treasure includes more than 28,000 coins, mostly from the 3rd century, and some fifty jewels and precious objects. The museum also has permanent collections ranging from prehistory to the Merovingian period, including a remarkable set of prehistoric tools. Since 2008 it has been part of the ELUSA Capitale Antique hub, together with the Séviac villa and the Cieutat domus.
