About the museum

The Séviac villa lies near Montréal-du-Gers, on a plateau overlooking the countryside. A modest building stood here in the mid-1st century; the villa was built in the 2nd century, enlarged, then reorganised in the last third of the 4th century. At 6,500 m², it is one of the largest Gallo-Roman villas in south-western Gaul; it was probably home to an aristocratic family.

The site is best known for its mosaics from the late 4th and early 5th centuries, with geometric and then plant-based designs, and for its baths of more than 625 m². The mosaics have been restored since the 1990s and are now sheltered under a large translucent roof. After antiquity, the site served as a cemetery with a church from the 8th to the 11th century.

Excavations resumed in 1959 under Paulette Aragon-Launet. The commune of Montréal-du-Gers has owned the site since 2003, and it has been listed as a historic monument since 1978. Since 2008 it has been part of ELUSA Capitale Antique, along with the Cieutat domus and the Musée archéologique du trésor d'Eauze.
