About the museum
The Hôtel Beurnier-Rossel was built in 1772–1773 in the centre of Montbéliard, on Place Saint-Martin. It belonged to the Beurnier-Rossel family, who were close to the court of Württemberg-Montbéliard. The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire was set up here at the beginning of the 20th century, in line with the bequest of Doctor Louis Beurnier.
The mansion spans three floors and keeps its original decor: family portraits, an encyclopaedic library and furniture by the Couleru dynasty of cabinetmakers. It shows the life of the wealthy Protestant middle class, which was strongly represented in the city’s administration in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Another part of the collections tells the history and traditions of the Pays de Montbéliard, a Protestant region since the 16th century: cupboards, headdresses known as câles à diairis, a hemp fabric called verquelure, weights and measures of the principality, liturgical objects and old toys. Popular prints from the Deckherr printing house and music boxes from the L’Épée factory illustrate local craftsmanship.
