About the museum
Frédéric Japy (1749–1812) settled in Beaucourt in 1777, after an apprenticeship as a watchmaker in Le Locle. There he developed faster and less costly machine tools and mechanized the production of movements, alarm clocks and clocks. From 1806 he also produced screws and passed the business on to his descendants.
Under the impetus of the following generations, Beaucourt, which had been no more than a village of 263 inhabitants in 1791, became an important manufacturing stronghold of the Pays de Montbéliard. The diversification of products and their wider availability made the Japy name well known. Frédéric Japy remains the emblematic figure of early industrialization.
The museum, located on rue Frédéric Japy in former industrial buildings, is run by the town of Beaucourt. It traces this industrial story and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.
