About the museum
Charles de Bruyères (1823–1905), a lawyer born in Remiremont, belonged to a family of the old nobility linked to the dukes of Lorraine and to the town's noble chapter. As a collector, he had gathered portraits, paintings, art objects and furniture in his home. By will, he bequeathed his house and collections to his native town on condition that they form a museum. It opened its doors in 1913.
The collections are centred on the 18th century. They include mainly 17th-century Dutch paintings, Italian paintings from the late 17th and early 18th centuries and 19th-century French works, including those by painters from the Vosges. The museum also holds prints, notably by Dürer and Callot, European faience from Delft, Nevers, Rouen, Strasbourg or Lunéville, and an important group of École de Nancy glass, with pieces by Gallé, Daum, Legras and Paul Nicolas.
Part of the holdings comes from the former abbey of Remiremont, one of the most important women's abbeys in France: a Carolingian intaglio, Gothic statues, statuettes of confraternities and tapestries. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
