About the museum

The museum was founded in 1865 with the Académie de la Val d’Isère, a learned society that wanted to study the history, archaeology and sciences of the region and make them known to residents and visitors alike. It therefore had an educational purpose from the outset.

The display begins with the 19th-century museum, with the Academy's first reports, curiosities, a geological map and mineral samples, in the former synodal hall of the bishop's palace. It then traces the history of Moûtiers from Roman times to the early 20th century. The archaeological collections come mainly from excavations carried out at Moûtiers and Aime.

Books, parchments, liturgical objects and paintings recall that Moûtiers is the seat of the archdiocese of Tarentaise. The visit ends with the salt works, the school of mines, and the economic and political life of the Tarentaise. Since 2025 the museum has been located on the upper floor of the Centre culturel Marius Hudry, with which the Académie has joined forces.
