About the museum
The museum is housed in the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, the former penitents' chapel of the village center, listed as a historic monument. The nave dates from 1640 and the bell tower from 1753. The building stands on the site of one of the village's first chapels, whose origins are said to go back to the year 860.
Since 1997 the chapel has housed the Museum of Sacred Art of Le Monêtier. The collection belongs to the commune and comes solely from the 31 chapels and churches still standing in the municipal area. It presents polychrome wooden statues, Aubusson tapestries, precious-metal work, including the oldest processional cross in the Hautes-Alpes, and liturgical vestments dating from the 15th to the 19th century. The lighting and the warm atmosphere highlight the artistic quality of the works.
