About the museum

The Museum of Alpine Religious Art of Melezet is housed in the Carmine chapel, a few steps from the parish church, and is part of the Diocesan Museum System of the Susa Valley. It holds goldsmiths' work, painting and sculpture dating from the 15th to the 19th century, from the religious buildings of the Bardonecchia basin.

The works come from the parish churches of Melezet, Les Arnauds and Rochemolles, and from the chapels of San Sisto, San Sebastiano, San Rocco, the Sacro Cuore, Notre Dame du Coignet and the Carmine. The route includes paintings, wooden statues, liturgical objects and vestments.

Among the most important pieces are the portable wooden altarpiece with the Madonna and Child and Saint Sixtus (1470), the panels of the Master of Coignet (1490–1500), a wooden Madonna by the Master of the Mass of Saint Gregory, the processional cross by the goldsmith Yppolite Borrel (1520–1529), a series of arm reliquaries from the 17th century and altar frontals of stamped and painted leather.
