About the museum
Ouvrage des Aittes is one of the defences built in the Alps in the 1930s to protect the border with Italy. Work ran from 1932 to 1938. The works is dug directly into the rock of the Lasseron, at the entrance to the Fonts de Cervières valley. It blends into the landscape and controls access to the Cerveyrette valley.
It is an infantry works: it was equipped with machine guns and short- or medium-range weapons, not cannon. Its galleries run beneath several metres of rock, and its combat blocks are protected by steel and reinforced concrete. It includes, among other things, water and food stores.
The works came into service in June 1940, after Italy entered the war. On June 20, 1940, its crew opened fire to defend the valley. After the war, the fort was abandoned and looted.
In 2002, a few residents of Cervières founded an association to preserve it and restore it. Thanks to their work, the site is secured and its state of preservation is exceptional. Grants from the commune and donations from visitors made it possible to install electricity for safe visits. Today the association’s volunteers guide visitors through the galleries and tell the story of the place.
