About the museum

The Museo Civico, founded in 1954, is housed in the 19th-century building that once held the Casa Comunale (town hall) in the historic centre of Bardonecchia, near the parish church of Sant’Ippolito. Spread over two floors, it collects material evidence of the culture of the old mountain village and offers a glimpse of everyday life and of the agricultural and pastoral economy that characterised the area before the arrival of mass tourism.

On the ground floor are displayed objects, furniture, furnishings and tools of domestic life, with a small section of religious art and antiquities. Visitors can see the local women’s costume and the precious bobbin lace (pizzi al tombolo), a craft which according to tradition was introduced at Rochemolles, a hamlet of Bardonecchia, at the beginning of the 17th century and which some women still practise today. The upper floor displays work tools, photographs and vintage postcards showing working scenes and landscapes of the past, as well as a small collection of stones from the area.
