About the museum

The Musée de l’Annonciade occupies the Chapel of Notre-Dame de l’Annonciade, built around 1510 by the Confraternity of the White Penitents. After the Revolution the chapel was sold as national property and then converted into a shipyard. In 1922 the town opened a first venue, the Museon Tropelen, to show the works of painters who had come to work in Saint-Tropez after Paul Signac’s arrival in 1892.

In 1950 the architect Louis Süe transformed the chapel into a museum to house the collection of the industrialist Georges Grammont. The museum opened in its present form on 7 August 1955, with 56 works from this collection. In 1961, 57 paintings were stolen; all but one were recovered in 1962.

The collections cover roughly the period 1890–1950 and focus on pointillism, the Nabis and Fauvism, with works by Signac, Seurat, Cross, Bonnard, Vuillard, Marquet, Matisse, Derain and Dufy. Upstairs, the displays are organised around Saint-Tropez as seen by painters, seascapes, southern landscapes, nudes and still lifes.
