About the museum
The museum occupies the former gendarmerie building of Saint-Tropez, where gendarmes worked from 1879 to 2003. It opened in 2016 under the town of Saint-Tropez and brings together two related themes: the history of the gendarmerie and the role of cinema in the town's image.
The Le Gendarme film series, shot in Saint-Tropez, made the town and the figure of the gendarme popular on screen. The museum draws on loans from private collectors and institutions such as the Cinémathèque française and the Institut Lumière, as well as previously unpublished interviews with people who took part in the shoots.
The circuit is spread over three levels. The first floor hosts the temporary exhibitions. The second floor shows reconstructed gendarmerie offices, archives and service weapons, as well as a 1950s cinema room and a screening room. The third floor presents a reconstructed Route nationale 7, a space on culture and celebration from the 1950s to today, and the dressing rooms of Brigitte Bardot and Romy Schneider.
