About the museum

The Musée départemental de la Montagne was founded in 1977 on the initiative of Albert Demard. It is located in Château-Lambert, a village at about 700 metres above sea level in the Haute-Saône Vosges, and is one of the three Musées départementaux Demard run by the Haute-Saône department.

The museum occupies a former farm and shows the life of the village community before the upheavals of the First World War (1914–1918). Four simply furnished living rooms recall the long winter evenings around the cast-iron stove; the cowshed and loft hold tools linked to rye, buckwheat and potatoes, the staples of the peasant diet.

A path along the slope presents the trades of the forest and the wood: woodcutter's hut, charcoal burner's hut, clog-maker's workshop, schlitte (wooden log sled) and the work of long-timber sawyers. The museum also tells the history of the region's mines, which yielded copper, silver-bearing lead and molybdenum, and invites visitors to discover the Bornes Royales.
