About the museum
The museum is housed in the “Tissage du Grand Ventron”, a small factory built in 1855 in the high Vosges valley. The site first ran on the power of a stream; from 1861 a 30-horsepower steam engine was added so that it could work even when water was scarce in summer. The factory closed in 1952 and its machines remained in place.
The idea of a textile museum was born after the success of an exhibition on textiles in Remiremont in 1985. The prefect of the Vosges and the local history society of Remiremont then looked for a place to keep the memory of this industry. Among several sites, the Ventron factory was chosen because it had remained intact since its closure. The museum was created in 1992.
The route follows the whole production chain: in the basement and outside, the steam engine and its boiler house; on the ground floor, the industrial cotton spinning mill, with machines showing the journey from the cotton bale to the thread; on the first floor, handweaving and industrial weaving, with the evolution of looms from the 18th century to today. The second floor hosts temporary exhibitions and a workshop space where visitors can try weaving.
