About the museum
The Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Agen was founded in 1876 in the historic centre of the town and holds the Musée de France label. It occupies four town houses on rue des Juifs: the Hôtels d’Estrades, de Vaurs, de Vergès and de Monluc. These residences date from the 15th and 16th centuries; the Hôtel de Monluc, for example, was the home of Marshal Blaise de Monluc, who received King Charles IX there in 1565.
At the beginning of the 20th century a restoration campaign led by the architect Léopold Payen renewed the south façades, the roofs and the stair tower. The town bought the Hôtel de Monluc in 1971 to enlarge the museum.
The collections cover minerals, natural history specimens, fine arts and decorative arts, from prehistory to the 21st century, and include works from non-European civilisations. The museum is currently closed for works. The Église des Jacobins, which has hosted its temporary exhibitions since 1990, will present part of the collections from October 29, 2026.
