About the museum
The Dole museum was founded in 1821. It was first housed in the Collège de l’Arc and the neighbouring former Jesuit chapel. In 1980 it moved into the Pavillon des Officiers, an 18th-century building in the Franche-Comté style, renovated on that occasion by the architect Louis Miquel, a former pupil of Le Corbusier.
The collections are spread over several levels. Archaeology, from the Neolithic to the Merovingian period, is presented in the basement. The old art galleries show Burgundian and Franche-Comté works, French, Italian and Northern European paintings, and a 19th-century group including the Barbizon School and Gustave Courbet. On the fourth floor, a contemporary art collection built up since 1983 brings together works from the 1960s onwards, including Figuration narrative and Nouveau Réalisme, as well as young figurative artists.
A thematic route on the second floor brings old and contemporary art from the 16th to the 21st century into dialogue. The museum is run by the City of Dole and belongs to the departmental network of the Juramusées.
