About the museum
The château of Pierre-de-Bresse was built in the 17th century by the powerful Thiard family. Its classical architecture is inspired by Versailles. Owned by the Saône-et-Loire Department, it is today the seat of the Écomusée de la Bresse bourguignonne, an association recognized as being of public utility, whose aim is to preserve, promote and pass on the heritage of the Bresse.
The château's permanent exhibition presents the different facets of the Bresse, a bocage plain rich in ponds and rivers, together with its distinctive crafts. The Écomusée also hosts temporary exhibitions, family workshops, concerts, lectures and festivals throughout the year. The château is surrounded by a 30-hectare park with woodland, a pond and animals. It also houses a shop selling local products, a tearoom, a group lodge, meeting rooms and a media library on the heritage of the Bresse.
The château also serves as a starting point for discovering the other sites run by the Écomusée, including mills, a farm, a tile works and several museums in the north of the Bresse bourguignonne. The site is part of the Route des châteaux de la Bourgogne du Sud and the Pass Patrimoine.
