Temporary location. The historic Jacobins site has been closed for works since May 2019. The museum is currently visited at the Maison à Pondalez (9 Grand'Rue); the Espace des arts (tobacco factory, 42 quai de Léon) occasionally hosts presentations of works from the collection.

About the museum

The museum opened at the end of the 19th century in the former Jacobins convent, a 13th-century building that became national property during the Revolution. It belongs to the City of Morlaix, holds the “Musée de France” label and occupies a building listed as a historic monument.

The collection combines old and 19th-century paintings, such as works by Courbet, Monet (“Pluie à Belle-Île”) and Boudin, with a major bequest from the painter Louis-Marie Baader in 1920 and a group of works by John Peter Russell acquired in 1927. It also includes archaeology, decorative and religious arts, folk arts and traditions, and collections linked to the sea and to trades.

The museum closed in May 2019 for major renovation and extension works at the Jacobins site. Meanwhile it remains present in the town: guided tours and exhibitions take place at the Maison à Pondalez, a half-timbered house from the early 16th century, and the Espace des arts, in the former tobacco factory, has hosted a selection of works from the collection.
