About the museum
The Musée des Phares et Balises opened in 1988. It was created by the Finistère Departmental Council with the Ministry of Equipment and the Armorique Regional Natural Park. Ouessant, a very busy shipping area, has always served as a testing ground for maritime signaling techniques.
The museum occupies the former machine hall of the power station of the Créac'h lighthouse. It holds fine optical pieces, including Fresnel lenses, models, and a reconstruction of the keepers' room of the Armen lighthouse. The permanent exhibition followed three themes: the history of shipwrecks, rescue and signaling; the evolution of lighting techniques; and the life of the lighthouse keepers.
The museum closed on November 6, 2023. The Finistère Departmental Council is carrying out expansion and modernization work. A new 900 m² route in the renovated building is announced by 2027, together with the opening of the Créac'h lighthouse to visitors. The museum holds the “Musée de France” designation.
