About the museum
The Écomusée d'Ouessant opened in summer 1968. It was founded by its first curator, Jean-Pierre Gestin, and is the first of its kind created in France. It came a few months before the birth of the Parc naturel régional d'Armorique and realised the idea of an open-air museum rooted in its environment, formulated by Georges-Henri Rivière in the early 1960s.
The project does not focus on a single site or a single period: it shows an entire territory and its changes from yesterday to today, with a strong link to its inhabitants.
The ethnographic collections illustrate domestic life and island life: furniture, crockery, costumes, tools for land and sea, devotional objects, graphic works. The islanders gave or sold them so that they could be displayed on the island. The museum is a house of the Parc naturel régional d'Armorique and holds the “Musée de France” designation.
