About the museum
The museum has been run by the Amis du Vieil Auvillar association since 1930. The objects first came from villagers who wanted to show the vitality of their town, and the collections were expanded over time. In 2003 the museum received the “Musée de France” label.
The faience section presents more than 400 local pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. They recall the dishes, plates and objects made between 1739 and 1909 in some twenty small workshops in the village.
The river boating section looks at the port of Auvillar, a former navigation center on the Garonne whose origins go back to a river toll known since 1204. Visitors can see votive offerings and boat models, along with a loudspeaker system that tells the story of navigation. The museum also displays a collection of goose-quill pens, the village's traditional objects and the historic musical instruments of the Lyre auvillaraise.
