About the museum
The museum is housed in the vaulted cellars and former kitchens of the Lectoure town hall, a former episcopal palace. The site has been recognised as a museum since 1540, when taurobolium altars were discovered beneath the cathedral choir. It was officially established in the 19th century. In 1874, Eugène Camoreyt installed the altars in the town hall chapel, then ran the museum from 1890. The collections were moved to the present cellars in 1972.
The rooms present objects from prehistory to the Middle Ages, many of them from the Roman city of the Lactorates: taurobolium altars, the Ocean mosaic, a sarcophagus, buckles from the Peyroulère necropolis and a statue of a gladiator. Merovingian funerary objects and pre-Romanesque marble capitals complete the route.
Three annexe rooms extend the visit: the Salle des Illustres, with portraits of local notables; the room in memory of Marshal Jean Lannes; and the room of Admiral Boué de Lapeyrère, both natives of Lectoure. A 19th-century pharmacy has also been reconstructed. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label, and its scientific direction is provided by the departmental heritage and museums service of the Gers. It has offered workshops for schools and families since 2000.
