About the museum
The municipal museum of La Réole has held the Musée de France label since September 17, 2003. Its collections come mainly from gifts and bequests from residents of the Réolais.
It is housed in a former Benedictine priory built in 1704 by Mazey, which became national property during the Revolution and is now protected as a historic monument. The building also houses the town’s administrative services. It features grilles and ironwork by Blaise Charlut, a staircase lit by an oval dome, and an inner cloister.
The collections cover archaeology (prehistory, protohistory, Middle Ages), decorative arts (textiles), painting and sculpture, uniforms and armour, manuscripts, numismatics, ethnology (costumes, trades and tools), local history, and natural sciences (shells and fossils). The museum is not open to the public. A municipal bulletin from January 2022 mentions a small exhibition entitled “Musée éphémère”, which showed some pieces from the collection at the priory while awaiting the reopening.
