About the museum
The museum occupies a house in the centre of Marmande that belonged to Albert Marzelles, a notary from the town. By his will of 1937 he bequeathed his home and some of its contents to the town, in order to create a museum. These objects form the first collection and recreate the living environment of the middle class at the start of the 20th century.
After the building was restored, the museum opened to the public in 1984. In 2002 it received the Musée de France label from the Ministry of Culture.
The collections have grown over the years through gifts, bequests and purchases. The most remarkable is the collection of 19th- and 20th-century paintings and drawings by Abel Boyé, an artist from Marmande, displayed on the second floor. It comprises more than sixty works and is the largest public French collection of this artist. It is complemented by works by Lot-et-Garonne artists of the same period, notably sculptures by Raoul Eugène Lamourdedieu and a painting by Étienne Mondineu.
