About the museum
The museum occupies the Notre-Dame-de-la-Pitié chapel, to the right of the central altar of the Church of Saint-André, also known as the Templars’ church. The chapel was built at the end of the 17th century as a votive offering to give thanks to the Virgin for the end of the great plague of 1650. The 12th-century church was fortified in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem.
The collection brings together local archaeology and ethnography objects, statues from the 12th to the 18th century, paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, tools, weapons and cult objects. Part of the treasure comes from gifts by notable figures who came to Luz to take the waters in the 19th century. In 1823 the Duchess of Angoulême gave the paintings of the Annunciation and the Assumption, and the Duke of Nemours gave a chandelier at the same time.
