About the museum

Founded in 1858 by the town of Saverne, the museum is one of the oldest municipal museums in Alsace, after those in Strasbourg and Colmar. It was created to gather in one place objects of historical interest found in the region. It first occupied the Saint-Michel chapel, near the parish church and the castle.

In 1952 the town bought the Château des Rohan from the state domains administration and installed the museum on the second floor of the south wing. In the late 1980s the collections spread into the central part of the building, where the section on Louise Weiss opened in 1996.

The collections come from the first archaeological finds made around Saverne, from carved sandstone fragments unearthed by chance during roadworks, notably during the digging of the Marne–Rhine Canal in 1845, and from paintings from the town’s churches and the castle. The circuit is now organised into three sections: archaeology, art and history, and Louise Weiss.
