About the museum
Ouvrage de Roche-la-Croix lies in the Ubaye valley and overlooks the Col de Larche. It combines 19th-century masonry with 20th-century concrete construction. The redoubt, at 1,900 m above sea level, and the Roche-la-Croix battery, at 2,100 m, were built between 1884 and 1889 to the design of General Séré de Rivières.
Between 1931 and 1936, a concrete Maginot works was dug beneath the stone fort. Six combat blocks are visible from outside, with embrasures or armoured cupolas. Block 5, the largest, houses a disappearing turret that blocks access to the pass. A crew of 161 men served the works, which has kept its armament and its electric power plant.
The fort is part of the Ubaye fortified system and can now be visited with a guide.
