About the museum

The museum is in the hamlet of Celle di Bellino, in the upper Valle Varaita, and is the documentation centre for the sundials that decorate houses, chapels, chalets and churches in the hamlets of the municipality: more than forty are known. Painted on the walls of homes and along the paths, they preserve a tradition of folk wisdom.

The restoration of the sundials began in 1999 on the initiative of the Municipality, also with European funds from the Gruppo di Azione Locale Valli del Viso. The exhibition route is divided into three rooms: “La volta delle stelle” (The Vault of the Stars), which reconstructs the constellation Ursa Minor, because the Pole Star is the reference for building a sundial; “La volta della gnomonica” (The Vault of Gnomonics), an introduction to the art of sundials and their components; and “La volta di Bellino” (The Vault of Bellino), devoted to the environment, history and community of Bellino, with the memory of the local builders.

Nearby, at Mas di Brun, an observatory allows the sky to be observed with a telescope and the Sun with specific instruments.
