About the museum
Ouvrage de Saint-Ours Haut belongs to the Maginot Line of the Ubaye valley. Together with Roche-la-Croix, it blocked the road to the Col de Larche, and both forts slowed the Italian advance in June 1940, before the armistice.
The works is dug into rock and built of reinforced concrete and steel; it is almost entirely underground. From outside, the entrance block and two combat blocks can be seen, with their embrasures and armoured cupolas. Inside, galleries house barracks, stores and a power plant.
It is a mixed artillery and infantry works with five combat blocks, five armoured cupolas, four mortars and five embrasures for twin machine guns. Its crew numbered about 240 men, and it is described as the largest completed Maginot works in the valley.
